The impact of Purpose Driven Strategies, from Government to ONGs
What are the similarities, differences, and challenges in strategy formulation for these radically different environments?
👋 Hey! This edition of our newsletter is about the latest podcast episode. The next release will bring the Product Vision Storyboard, continuing with the vision series.
To create a good strategy, you need a vision. If the vision is inspiring and drives a significant purpose, chances are you have stronger bases to build a motivating strategy.
In this episode of 100 Product Strategies, I interviewed Simone Dive, who started her product career in gambling! In Canada, the government provided the service, which already had some nuances for strategy. After being a product leader in government, enterprise, and startups, she felt the calling to do something more purposeful, eventually leading her to work on renewables, and finally at an ONG.
Listen now on Apple, Spotify, Google, and YouTube, and read on for my takeaways and highlights of the episode.
My takeaways from this episode
To begin with, Simone killed the myth: her role at an ONG is not that different from for profit orgs. At the end, it is all about people!
Simone likes to keep strategy visual and simple, and used the ProduxLabs Strategy Canvas, and connected it to other collaboration visual tools like opportunity solution trees.
There was a great quote: “How fast you want to go and make change decisions is tied to how successful you current business is.” Being in government, and relatively successful, there was a chance (and need!) to keep things stable and evolve with a more planned and slower approach.
A big factor on how quickly you can create your strategy is the size of the organization: you need to bring more people along and collect stronger evidence.
During the messy strategy process, you will need to make decisions with uncertainty and lack of evidence. If you need to prioritize, always aim to get the customer's needs right.
Do the influencing before entering the “decision” room. You present your insights and potential decisions before, check understanding and alignment. Get to understand their different perspectives and needs. If there are conflicts you want to know beforehand and prepare more info in advance.
